The GM Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, is dedicated on May 16, 1956.

Alfred P. Sloan retires as Chairman of the GM on April 2, 1956.

Buick's grillework receives a minor rearrangement for 1956 as hoods have a slight point to them. With the new two-tone paint nobody misses the Buick's bombsight hood ornaments. Also in 1956 Buick departs from the slit type rear wheel wells, giving the cars a much better side view.
Buick's prices range from $2,400 to $3,700 during the mid 50ies.

Chrysler introduces push-button automatics.

Ford automobiles offer seat belts for the first time as optional, but the public is uninterested.

Packard offers electric powered doors.

The Continental marque appears separate from Lincoln, producing the Mark II.

The Federal Highway Defense Act became law, setting up a system of limited access interstate highways. It would contribute to the nation's sub urbanization and urban decay.

A silent flick which details activities in the Ford plant. The 2 source films could'nt be more different. One looks to be made in the 20's featuring an overview of the plant. The film then goes to a negative for a few seconds and turns into a positive, and a man standing next to a car. We're startled for a second, thinking we're still in the 1920's footage, but actually, this was made in the late 50's it looks like, a man with crutches unveils a plaque that tells the plant is the birthplace of the Model T. After that, there's nothing to do except to tear it down. And to hammer the point down, we get four different angles of the smoke stack coming down. Sort of bizarre.

Trader Thorne (1956)
Sponsor: Ford Motor Company
Producer:
Wilding Picture Productions

Auto dealer sales film explaining why trade-ins are necessary -- because almost all customers already have cars. Director: Jack Tilles. Writer: George Wilcock. Camera: John Niklasch. Sound: Raymond Esh. Art Director: Edward Jewell. Editor: Foster Travis. With Hugh Beaumont (Joe Thorne), Glen Denning (Herb Potter), Frances Helm (Charlotte), Ed Prentiss (Mr. Fuller), Barry Hopkins (Mr. Thaler), Art Van Harvey (Mr. Armstrong), and Hope Summers (Mrs. Armstrong).
Hugh Beaumont (of "Leave it to Beaver") is the greatest Ford salesman of all time, spending every minute of the day pursuing sales. Driving around town looking for leads, approaching people on the street, even looking up license plate numbers and calling them. In the showroom, he's a shark, playing the high-low game to perfection, and tricking the rubes into buying extras they don't need.

Here, he teaches a new salesman (and by extension, those watching this film) the tricks of the trade. It's not surprising that the Ford sales method involves deceit, but I am surprised they allowed it to be put on film. Of course they never thought it would end up here...
