page35_3

It's the R&R era, and the automobile seems to follow that style. Bright colours and lotsa crome! American cars from the fifties are... a state of mind!

This year Chevrolet introduces the Powerglide transmission, becoming the first competitor in the low-price field to offer fully automatic shifting.

Allison begins flight tests on its experimental Turbo-Liner, America's first GM turbine-powered airplane for commercial use.

General Motors Opel's Ruesselsheim plant is rebuilt.

1950 Buick's belt lines run down the car's side, midway in height, casually rising to form the rear fenders. Buick's tail lights could pass for '58 Chevy items, placed vertically, at the fender's bottom end. Nine massive smiling grille bars loop over the bumper, tucking out of sight and are blockaded by huge bumper guards at both ends.

Nash introduces his first compact car: the Rambler. It has a 100-inch wheelbase and introduces seat belts.

K. T. Keller becomes Chrysler's Chairman of the Board on November 3, 1950, as Chrysler enter the space age by signing a contract with the U.S. Army to build the Jupiter space exploration missiles. In 1952, one of America's first successful space flight will carry two monkeys to an altitude of 350 miles at the top of a Jupiter missile.

Total vehicle production in the United States: 8,007,000, or 75.7 percent of the world total of 10,577,000.
Total vehicle registration: 49,161,691.
Top speed for new cars is 105 mph; gasoline fuel efficiency is 15 miles per gallon.

When hostilities erupt in Korea in 1950, Chrysler again supplies military products including tanks, military trucks and air raid sirens. By the end of the Korean police action, Chrysler will be participating in 31 government projects worth more than $1.1 billion.
